After hearing from many residents regarding traffic visibility issues at the Ada Drive/Thornapple River Drive intersection, and concerns about vehicle speed and pedestrian safety in the Village, Ada Township is starting an intersection improvement project on Ada Drive at Bronson Street and Thornapple River Drive. The project is starting on Thursday, October 11. Bumpouts will be installed at the intersections and some traffic lane adjustments will also be made.
The curb bumpouts will establish defined "no parking" zones along Ada Drive at the two intersections, providing drivers on Thornapple River Dr. and Bronson St. with a better view of traffic before preceding through the intersections. The bumpouts will also create safer conditions for pedestrians crossing Ada Drive, by shortening the crosswalk distance. Based on documented experience in other communities, the bumpouts will also result in slower vehicle speeds through the Village on Ada Drive.
Separate left turn lanes from Ada Drive onto Thornapple River Drive will also be removed as part of the project. Left turns will continue to be accommodated from a single traffic lane in each direction on Ada Drive.
During construction the on-street parking along Ada Drive will be closed, but additional public parking can be found along Bronson Street, at the Township Offices, and at the parking lot of The Community Church.
The project will be completed in three phases, with estimated dates below:
Phase 1: October 11-25 - includes construction in the street with both lanes open
Phase 2: October 26-November 8 - eastbound lane on Ada Drive will remain open, while the westbound lane will be closed and detoured
Phase 3: November 9-November 15 - work will be limited to sidewalks with both lanes open
Thank you for your patience during this project as we work on improving safety in the Village!
